Best Practices for Scanning Documents on Your Phone

Mobile scanning is convenient, but the quality of the photo decides how useful the result will be. Whether you are saving a receipt or capturing a contract, these basics will help.

Use Natural Light Whenever Possible

Daylight near a window is ideal. It avoids harsh shadows and gives the camera enough information to capture small text. If you must use indoor light, try to position two light sources on either side of the page.

Hold the Camera Flat

Tilted photos cause distortion that confuses the OCR engine. Hold your phone parallel to the page. Many built-in camera apps now include a level guide to help you line things up.

Capture the Whole Page

Leave a small margin around the document so the cropping tool can work cleanly. Cutting off edges can also cut off important context like dates or totals on a receipt.

Storage and Organisation

Save your scans with descriptive filenames. A folder named by month makes it easy to find a specific receipt later, especially if you process dozens of documents per week.
